History and foundation
Nimnik stands in woodland near the village of Kurjače in Braničevo. Tradition connects its foundation with Duke Bogosav and the time of Prince Lazar. Historical sources refer to it as a dependency of Ravanica. The church is dedicated to the Translation of the Relics of St Nicholas.
Art and sacred heritage
Following destruction in 1813, the monastery was rebuilt during the 19th century. The Svetinja chapel is especially associated with a tradition about a girl who was killed. This belongs to local and religious memory; its details should not all be presented as historically proven events.
What to notice on a visit
Our route pairs Nimnik with Tumane, allowing time for a quiet visit and an explanation of its traditions. Notice the stone church and woodland setting. The smaller complex offers a starting point for discussing monastic dependencies, rebuilding and the ways a local community preserves the memory of its sacred place.
Visiting respectfully
A monastery is a place of prayer and daily monastic life. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, speak quietly and follow the hosts' instructions. Ask permission before photographing interiors or people. Access to individual areas and the course of the visit depend on services and the monastery's rules on the day. Always ask your guide Božidar what is permitted and where; he will explain the monastery's rules.
