History and foundation

Tumane, in wooded countryside near Golubac, connects the history of Braničevo with the tradition of hermit life. Local tradition tells of Miloš Obilić and St Zosimus, while a firmly documented reference appears in the Ottoman survey of 1572–1573. The present church was consecrated in 1924.

Art and sacred heritage

The relics of St Zosimus and St Jakov of Tumane hold particular significance for pilgrims. The story of Zosimus' nearby hermitage introduces a different form of monastic life: withdrawal for prayer. Monastic traditions and accounts of believers belong to its spiritual history and should be understood in that context.

What to notice on a visit

Allow sufficient time for prayer and a considered visit, particularly if you would like to learn about the hermitage. Our route combines Tumane with Nimnik, although the two monasteries have distinct characters. The visit follows the monasteries' rules and the conditions on the day.

Visiting respectfully

A monastery is a place of prayer and daily monastic life. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, speak quietly and follow the hosts' instructions. Ask permission before photographing interiors or people. Access to individual areas and the course of the visit depend on services and the monastery's rules on the day. Always ask your guide Božidar what is permitted and where; he will explain the monastery's rules.
