  • Manasija

Manasija, also known as Resava, was founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević near Despotovac. Built in the early 15th century, it was completed in 1418. The Church of the Holy Trinity belongs to the Morava architectural tradition and stands within substantial fortifications.

    Art, sacred heritage & visiting

The monastery became an important centre for copying and translating books, associated with the Resava School. Surviving frescoes, including depictions of holy warriors, reveal the achievements of medieval painting. Walls and towers recall a period when protecting a monastic community required considerable defensive structures.

First take in the fortifications, then give time to the church and its frescoes. This makes it easier to connect the despot's story with books and art. Our day trip and two-day route introduce Manasija alongside the other monasteries listed in their programmes, allowing space for questions.

  • Ravanica

Ravanica stands near Senje, close to Ćuprija. Founded by Prince Lazar in the second half of the 14th century, its church is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ. It is central to understanding Serbia before the Battle of Kosovo and the later veneration of St Prince Lazar.

    Art, sacred heritage & visiting

Ravanica's architecture played an important role in the emergence of the Morava school. The multiple domes, carved stone decoration and surviving fortifications show the relationship between religious and defensive functions. The history of Lazar's relics connects Ravanica with Srem Ravanica in Vrdnik.

Look at the exterior decoration, the relationship between church and fortifications, and the surviving painting. A visit introduces Lazar's foundation while distinguishing historical evidence from later epic tradition. On our itineraries, Ravanica forms part of the wider story of the Morava monasteries.

  • Sisojevac

Sisojevac stands in Sisevac beside the Crnica River, near Ravanica. Its medieval history is associated with the monk Sisoje and the late 14th century. The church is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ and belongs to the Morava architectural tradition.

    Art, sacred heritage & visiting

Following a long period of abandonment, the monastery was restored in more recent times. The form of the church and surviving wall paintings preserve traces of medieval art, while reconstructed parts reflect efforts to revive monastic life. Older and restored layers should therefore be distinguished when describing the complex.

Sisojevac complements the stories of Ravanica and Manasija while offering a quieter, more intimate setting. On our tour we discuss the dedication to the Transfiguration, monastic tradition and the monastery's relationship with its landscape. It is visited alongside the other monasteries listed in the day-trip programme.

  • Lešje

Lešje, on the slopes of Mount Baba near Paraćin, preserves the story of a monastery in the medieval Petrus region. Written sources connect its church with nobleman Vukoslav and his family in the 14th century. Its history includes a link with Hilandar, to which the church was donated.

    Art, sacred heritage & visiting

The present complex, dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God, also reflects recent rebuilding. Medieval remains should be distinguished from the newer buildings that attract visitors today. This helps explain the continuity of the sacred place without suggesting that everything visible belongs to one period.

At Lešje we discuss monastic dependencies, the donation of churches and Serbia's spiritual connections with Mount Athos. Observe the present complex while placing its older layers in the history of the Petrus region. Lešje is one of the stops listed in our two-day itinerary.
