History and foundation

Sisojevac stands in Sisevac beside the Crnica River, near Ravanica. Its medieval history is associated with the monk Sisoje and the late 14th century. The church is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ and belongs to the Morava architectural tradition.

Art and sacred heritage

Following a long period of abandonment, the monastery was restored in more recent times. The form of the church and surviving wall paintings preserve traces of medieval art, while reconstructed parts reflect efforts to revive monastic life. Older and restored layers should therefore be distinguished when describing the complex.

What to notice on a visit

Sisojevac complements the stories of Ravanica and Manasija while offering a quieter, more intimate setting. On our tour we discuss the dedication to the Transfiguration, monastic tradition and the monastery's relationship with its landscape. It is visited alongside the other monasteries listed in the day-trip programme.

Visiting respectfully

A monastery is a place of prayer and daily monastic life. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, speak quietly and follow the hosts' instructions. Ask permission before photographing interiors or people. Access to individual areas and the course of the visit depend on services and the monastery's rules on the day. Always ask your guide Božidar what is permitted and where; he will explain the monastery's rules.
