History and foundation

Novo Hopovo is an important spiritual and educational monastery of Fruška Gora. Its early origins are associated with the Branković family, although the older history involves tradition and differing interpretations. The present Church of St Nicholas was built in 1576 with donations from founders whose names are recorded above the western entrance.

Art and sacred heritage

The church preserves notable 17th-century frescoes and the relics of St Theodore Tiron. Dositej Obradović lived in the monastery from 1757 to 1760. His time at Hopovo connects the monastic library and personal learning with the later story of the Serbian Enlightenment.

What to notice on a visit

Notice the dome and the proportions of the church before looking at the arrangement of frescoes inside. Novo Hopovo offers a starting point for understanding monasteries as places that preserved books, educated people and transmitted artistic models. Its history is especially rewarding when read alongside that of nearby Staro Hopovo.

Visiting respectfully

A monastery is a place of prayer and daily monastic life. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, speak quietly and follow the hosts' instructions. Ask permission before photographing interiors or people. Access to individual areas and the course of the visit depend on services and the monastery's rules on the day. Always ask your guide Božidar what is permitted and where; he will explain the monastery's rules.
