History and foundation

Velika Remeta stands among the monasteries of eastern Fruška Gora. Local tradition associates its foundation with King Dragutin, but this should not be treated as a securely established date. Written evidence naming the monastery comes from the 16th century, including a document from 1562. Its church is dedicated to St Demetrius.

Art and sacred heritage

The Baroque bell tower, built between 1733 and 1735, is a striking feature of the complex. It recalls the rebuilding of Fruška Gora's monasteries under the Metropolitanate of Karlovci. Fragments of 16th-century wall painting also survive in the church, offering a glimpse of an earlier artistic layer.

What to notice on a visit

Start by looking at the tower, then take time to notice the church itself. Velika Remeta offers a useful introduction to the distinction between local tradition, documentary evidence and surviving buildings. A visit also provides an opportunity to approach the monastery as a living place of prayer rather than solely a historic monument.

Visiting respectfully

A monastery is a place of prayer and daily monastic life. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, speak quietly and follow the hosts' instructions. Ask permission before photographing interiors or people. Access to individual areas and the course of the visit depend on services and the monastery's rules on the day. Always ask your guide Božidar what is permitted and where; he will explain the monastery's rules.
