History and foundation
Staro Hopovo lies near Novo Hopovo but has its own history and distinctive appearance. Tradition links its foundation to Despot Đorđe Branković, later Bishop Maksim. Reliable Ottoman surveys record the monastery in the 16th century, so its earliest origins should be presented with care.
Art and sacred heritage
The older wooden church was dedicated to St Nicholas. After it fell into disrepair, the present stone-and-brick church was built between 1752 and 1756 and dedicated to St Panteleimon. Its small single nave and dome give Staro Hopovo a character different from the larger monastery complexes.
What to notice on a visit
This is a rewarding stop for looking slowly at architecture and considering successive restorations. The names 'old' and 'new' do not tell the whole story: the surviving churches come from different periods. Visiting both Hopovo monasteries helps distinguish the history of a religious foundation from the age of the building seen today.
Visiting respectfully
A monastery is a place of prayer and daily monastic life. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, speak quietly and follow the hosts' instructions. Ask permission before photographing interiors or people. Access to individual areas and the course of the visit depend on services and the monastery's rules on the day. Always ask your guide Božidar what is permitted and where; he will explain the monastery's rules.
